Vigil for Japan in Witzenhausen

I have just returned from the 3rd joint Interdisciplinary Study Tour – Kenya 2011 ’Commodity chains to foster job creation and development’ with The Centre for International Rural Development of the University of Kassel in Witzenhausen, the CeTSAF of the University of Göttingen and DITSL.

Not a lot of news was available while we were traveling there so it was all rumors in Kenya. In Nairobi and Addis Ababa the televisions showed what was happening and we were all shocked and horrified to see the news about Japan and to see the images of the war zone that the Mediterranean had become. Amazing what can happen in just 15 days. Our flight was diverted to fly over Egypt and Greece and then over Northern Italy.

A vigil was held last night on the Markplatz here in Witzenhausen to remember the victims in Japan and to pressure the Stadwerk (Public Utility) to switch all Witzenhausen energy to sustainable sources. The people of the Transition Town movement, the Green Party and the local churches gave speeches emphasizing the need for Germany to do away with Nuclear Power. It seems that this event may well prove to be a catalyst for a greater push for green energy in Germany.
